Windows Movie Maker (comes with XP and Vista automatically) is a decent one. Easy to use, but really can freeze when the amount of video goes into DVD data levels.

Vista's Movie Maker is also able to publish DVDs while with XP you need to have a plug-in (third party like Nero, or PowerProducer), but if you are just storing the vids to your HD then it's no problem.

It produces decent quality, but what I find lacking is that it only saves the projects in .wmv format and you can not really specify the resolution and such very accurately. And you can't decide on the framerates. So publish your movie onto HD first.

The plus side is that audio editing and integrating into video is very easy and you can even record your own tracks (if you like to do karaoke vids for example)

For a vastly more complex video editing you can use the free VirtualDub which can save the vids as AVI too and you can control the compression quality much better. But the audio editing is more complex with it.

I would say start with MovieMaker and if you find it not sufficient move to VirtualDub.

Flying under radar.
