"Overlapping" faction typically arise when a group of people decide that they do not want to join the current factions for one of the below, but not restricted to, reasons:

1) An Import: The Mercenary faction that you are referring to, the WT, are from another server. They wanted to maintain the cohesiveness and brotherhood-like spirit of their past, so they did not choose to join the BAF, or become part of the BAF. Many other factions, such as the Mandalorians and now defunct DW are imports.

2) A Conflict with the exiting Leadership: Many new factions were created because their leaders disagreed with the leadership of a pre-existing faction and decided to form their own. These overlap factions are very rare, as they do often get shot down in the faction creation boards.

3) A New Origin: The RoS and Benitez are somewhat like this. They technically are overlap factions to their original counterparts, but were formed because there was a difference in their origin and background. Typically, these factions do similar work as their original counterparts, but are unique in many different ways.

4) A New Mission Statement: The OPG and faction status hopeful CSS are examples of these. Both have ZoIs and altered goals that are rather different than that of their original counterparts.

5) A New Concept: Examples include the Phantoms, SCRA, and Harvesters. These factions were created to add a new facet of RP to the server. Their RP is completely unique and has little to do with the original vanilla storyline, though it is based off of it.


None of these, however, should be used to judge a new faction. It's performance and existence on the server should solely be judged by first hand experience with their leadership, players, and roleplay quality.
