Perhaps instead of entirely new specie, which seems to be a beating dead horse topic around for roleplay, perhaps I might suggest trying using some experiment conducted during 800-801 A.S. as a basis for the character. Let's face it - imports are rarely if ever make good addition around. Sure, there is CR but how much time it took them to adapt into environment, yet still I see flak being thrown at them from time to time, mostly unjustified but that's another topic entirely. Back to the original subject: in other words using notable features you described in the story but seamlessly adapting them into Freelancer universe by using Freelancer history as a basis rather than altering it. I think that can work out.
