Some hard-earned lessons I've learned.

1. The game is Discovery.

While many systems are consistently busy, and perhaps over-populated, the advice "Go Discover" is worth bearing in mind. Travel is always worthwhile.

2. You win some, you lose some.

No-one, and I mean no-one, wins every combat they get into. Defeat is character-building. You get better with every fight. Everyone makes mistakes.

3. No-one likes a whiner.

Advice I could probably take heed of myself. When you lose a fight, you can accuse another player, either openly or privately, of everything. Poor role-play. Manipulating the game's mechanics. Using overpowered ships and guns. And you might be right. Or it may be sour grapes.

4. Don't be a know-all.

You might have an encyclopediac knowledge of the game. But admitting one's own ignorance is the first step on the path to wisdom.

5. Less is more.

This applies to everything. Characters, ships, armaments. One character played effectively requires some effort; drowning in several characters can make you lose focus of why you started playing in the first place.

6. You can't have everything.

Where would you put it?
