I do believe a certain amount of goods is equal to the same amount of other goods, isn't it?

Say you have 12 units of water, and 12 units of Optronics. Is that an equal amount of those materials? If we're in space, and they're in a cargo hold which is a vacuum, we can assume that the units of cargo are the same, because the materials are packed to retain their original properties in a vacuum.

So, if one unit is literally just one unit, then one unit of food should take up the same amount of space as one unit of Optronics.

In other words, which takes up more space? 12 liters of water or 12 liters of feathers? Neither takes up more space, they're both the same volume. If cargo is measured by volume, and one unit is one unit of volume, then one unit of food should take up the same amount of space as one unit of Optronics.

And why would anyone measure the size of a cargo hold in anything than volume?
