Overusing emoticons is detrimental, but prudent usage can greatly increase the level of communication between people.

I must disagree.

Emoticons in freelancer chat are an example of oversimplification.

Its way more elegant to use specific and descriptive verbs like:

*grins*
*jeers*
*cheers*
*laughs*
*wink*
*waves*
*coughs*
etc..
