Upgradable ship ideas

Well, I'd say it's a wee bit stretching it. Maybe in the 31st century they can make a modular space superiority fighter, maybe not, it just doesn't seem right to make it with that interchangeable parts. Maybe if you did it in a way that the upgrades eat up a lot of cargo space, and used that to limit the possible power of the ship? In example: Starflier can't get too big of a powercore or it wouldn't have any space left for anything but it's basic hull and shield, and no guns! Erm... is that even possible?
