Qualifications: High School graduate [not that he cares]; Flight test achievements were only slightly above average, but has greatly improved over time due to past experience and personal training; is capable of taking care of his ship on his own [maintenance, repairs, re-arming, modifications, etc.] due to both his father's limited teaching in the past and his own personal studies of spacecraft hardware that he did a few years ago out of interest; Kerry's experience with mining has taught him patience, and his time in the helium fields has made him a somewhat decent manual navigator, so long as the computer does the math for him.

Brief Biography: Born on planet Erie. His father, Jay Kerry, earned enough from his Space-farer Servicing job on some of the smaller landing pads to allow his mother freedom to remain at home instead of working abroad like several other families they knew. During the times when he was free from school, Deveron learned from his father a bit about how some designs of ship hardware functioned. After his graduation his father awarded him with an opportunity to take a flight test early. While he did reasonably well, both him and his parents knew he could do better. Three years later, he bought his first vessel: An old, worn-down Rhino.
Deveron left to seek his fortune amongst the stars that day. After his first trade lane jump, he spent some time doing small favors for people around Philadelphia station. Eventually he heard that he could make a serious bit of coin by mining the Helium in the cold gas clouds near Erie.
When he had first heard of the idea, he had been excited and even had let a few small delusions of fortune trickle through his mind, but when he had his ship initiate a simple automated mining process, he realized just how slow, dull, and boring it really was.
Over time, Kerry got used to the long time periods he had to spend collecting his shipments of Helium for Philie station. Buyers seemed to materialize out of thin air and the credits began to pile up.
One day, Deveron Kerry decided a little change of scenery would be a nice reward. He had earned it, after all, from his long grind of a daily routine. After a bit of a wondering where to go, he was told Manhattan, New York was a nice place to visit, being the capitol of Liberty. He was also informed that he could carry Neon from Erie to Manhattan and make a tidy little profit on his way there. The idea was irresistible. A vacation that payed for itself. What more could he ask for?
His Rhino was loaded up within the hour, and he found himself riding the trade lane to the New York Jump Gate with naught but an old favorite tune playing on his holoplayer.
When he arrived at New York, he realized two things. The first was that there was a massive, dark vastness all around him. Occasionally lightning flashed at random intervals.
The second thing he noticed however, was that his sensors has suddenly ceased to reliably function.
While he didn't want to let it spoil his day, he could not help but feel slightly annoyed that he would be flying to New York practically blind.
After a short period of hesitation, as if hoping the cloud would just vanish, he finally gave in and docked with the trade lane.

One...two...three....four...five...

Suddenly he found himself stopping prematurely, though he could not be sure why. This had never happened to him before. A Trade lane, failing? Had it been a malfunction?
His silent question was answered almost immediately by a low, rough voice coming through his comms.
Well well. Looks like we've got a problem. I want money, and you have money. I wonder how we could...make this work...

Pardon me, sir? said Kerry. Uh...I don't know if you've noticed, but it seems this trade lane malfunctioned or some such-

Cut it, tradie. I want creds, and I want them now. I'd say 300K about cuts it.

Kerry felt an icy chill go down his back. He'd heard of the criminals that operated around Liberty. Back on Phillie where he heard stories about them, it had all seemed so far away.

...and yet here one was, demanding demeanor and all.

He knew he had to think fast. Uhhhh, I'm sorry sir? I don't think I heard you right. At the same time he boosted power to his thrusters.

Don't play dumb with me, tradie. I'm not cool with your li'l schemes, alright? I want my credits now, or I will, without hesitation, render your hulk of unprocessed scrap unfit for pilotin'-

He slammed on the throttle and felt the acceleration send his ship flying straight past the rogue and on forward.

Unsubmisive, eh? We'll see about that! the Rogue yelled.

Kerry saw his shield meter drop a quarter. To counteract the rogue, he knew he had to do something, and do it fast.
He began swerving erratically to evade the laser bursts that were burning through space to hit him. His shields began recovering as he dodged the rogue's firepower and tried to remain straight on course. He did nothing but repeat the process over and over and over again, until finally he realized that he had lost his sense of time and that the purple clouds were thinning to nothingness as the light of several stars in the vastness of space penetrated them. He realized then that he had literally thrusted many long kilometers without a single stop. The picosecond his sensors were rendered efficient again he broadcasted a message via the Common Liberty frequency.

This is Deveron Kerry, requesting assistance from any lawful forces in the area. I am under attack by a hostile rogue!

No response came. It seemed as if he and the rogue were the only ones in the entire system. A sense of fear overcame him briefly, the likes of which he had never felt before.

This is Deveron Kerry, I repeat, I am under attack by a hostile rogue at the Philadelphia->Fort Bush trade lane! Need help ASAP!

After what seemed like an eternity due to the amount of evading he had to perform to keep the rogue from getting another blast to his hull, a voice came though the comm.

This is LPI patrol delta six, we read you on our long-range sensors, but can't deal with the threat currently due to a pair of xenos that just crossed our path. No other patrols are currently free, so just keep him busy as long as you can. We'll get you out of there as soon as these blasted- [distant WHUMP is heard]...

Just then he heard metal screeching and then...

WHAPFFFFFFFFFFFFFOOOOOOOOOOOOKH!

It took him a few moments to realize he was in an escape pod, drifting in the darkness of space.

He could not believe he had just lost a shipment of Neon to someone he didn't even know. The credits, and his ship, were lost, and seemingly forever irrecoverable.

After a few hours of waiting an LSF found Kerry's pod and brought him to West Point immediately. After a night in medical, he was released but found himself wondering what he could possibly do now. He asked around, trying to find answers as to why no one had been able to respond to his calls for help with any form of action. Eventually he came to learn that LPI had been low on personnel as of late, and that the LSF had been on assignment elsewhere at the time, rendering them incapable of helping him.
Seeing his old career ruined in the short term, Kerry realized that joining LPI was most likely the best thing he could do for himself, and for anyone else. He had just lost what, to him, was a fortune in both time and money, and he knew he was far from the only one. What if other poor liberty peoples, just like himself, or worse even, suffered similar loss? What if they even lost more than their ships and cargo?
Staffing problems, eh? he said to himself. If it means I get a ship, I think this will do nicely.
