OMEGA-5 SYSTEM, CADIZ

Michelle watched carefully as the steam rose gently from the dark bowels of Cadiz, marveling at how it wrapped itself around the rough industrial buildings like a giant snake before spreading out into a fine invisible mist. The effect was as calming as it was mesmerizing and it helped with organizing ones thoughts. Tomorrow, she, Captain Michelle Hendrix of the Merciful Wretch, a boss in a union of slavers was going to launch one of the largest non-military raids in Sirius history.

Michelle felt sick. This operation was dangerous in many ways. What had her stomach all tied up was the possibility of failure. Most freebooters would be bragging if they were in Michelle's shoes, but they were all very stupid people. If this operation went south, and Rheinland was guaranteed to try to ensure that it did, she would have no life left. The underworld was unforgiving to its leaders when they failed. Slavery had taken her first life away from her many years ago, and now it was poised to take her second life as a slaver away too.

Wiping the tear she had shed for her simpler youth, Michelle looked up at the platform across from her. Hundreds of crewmen from over half a dozen different ships including her own were all sharing in a premature celebration of tomorrow's success. Circling above them like hawks were Corsair guards who were all no doubt intent of making sure their 'guests' did not become too rowdy and destroy their home.

Sensing that trouble could be on the horizon, Michelle pushed all of her doubts and fears from her mind and headed off to break up the celebration. Tomorrow will bring what it will, and one way or the other Michelle was going to adapt.
