I would think the energy is drained from a internal reactor. Perhaps they get larger as the classes do.
Mini Nuclear - Fighter, ect ect...

all fighter's/bombers take energy from their fusion drives. vie magnetohydrodynamics.
(and yeah, i spelled that right the first time.)

bigger ships can use a number of other things.
