I don't think that's true. Freelancer can distinguish the difference between individual items, it doesn't group each of them as 'one'. Otherwise decaying commodites would all die at once instead of one at a time.

But I'll test this, see if it is the case or not.

Mmk, tested it. It seems when you tractor in a damaged bot, it spreads the damage out evenly across all your bots. I shot two bots down to nearly destroyed, then tractored them all in and ejected the 10 bots I had individually, and they all had a small amount of damage.
