I'd still like to see an ion-cannon style weapon for capships, as an alternative to the light mortar/mortar/heavy mortar =/

Give it similar damage per second, but high refire rate and low damage per shot, that way in order to do the same amount of damage as a light mortar would, you have to keep the beam on the enemy while you fire.

Light mortar is 150k hull / 75k shield damage for 1 million energy cost. 0.25 refire rate, 3k or so range, and 600m/s speed.

So, our 'beam' weapon would be something like this:
Hull Damage: 3,750
Shield Damage: 1,875
Projectile Speed: 700
Range: 2000
Refire Rate: 10.00
Energy Cost: 25,000

Same DPS as the light mortar, same energy cost for the amount of damage (aka same efficiency), higher speed, shorter range, requires a constant stream of fire in order to do the same amount of damage a light mortar would do instantly when it hits. You have to hold the beam on the enemy for 4 seconds to do the damage of 1 light mortar.

Nice thing with a beam weapon like that is easier aiming, and energy conservation. If you fire a light mortar and it misses, you're out 1 million energy - but with a beam weapon, if you miss, you can stop the beam mid-fire so you only lose some of the energy.
