Its just as easy to ban him and forget as it is to ban him then lulwutverbalpwn him behind his back; the latter of which is rather pointless and makes said party look stupid, hence the given reason for a loss of respect. Clearly, if one is not willing to give respect to another by forgiving and forgetting, he is not worthy to receive it.
