It doesn't have to be huge. Just look huge. Do you really need to fly endlessly for 100k across a planet. And the planetary ''systems'' don't have to be shown on the map, it could just be hidden.

That is somewhat frivolous unless your intelligence is an issue. I mean seriously, how hard is it to say he is ''at'' Manhattan vs ''in orbit'' of Manhattan. And as for inside/outside, you see the same problem going from system to system, it's just this time someone is leaving a planet or coming down. Reasonable pursuits if you ask me, I'm however sorry no one gave you a transporter to stay on top of people.
