Roleplay versus Fairness to others

It's a balance.

On one hand, you need that hard risk involved with the pirate who is ideologically opposed to your activities and your company. I've always wanted to play a Daumann or a BMM for that reason.

On the other hand, fairplay and a possibility of different outcomes make it much less of a railroaded event where there's only two possible outcomes. That makes it entertaining for everyone involved as opposed to the "THIS IS WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE" attitude that so many use as an excuse to only fight with overwhelming force or try to crush a character out of existence entirely.

Pardon the tangent, I just hate that attitude. Sure, if you're a Hessian hitting a Daumann, threaten to crush him like an insect. But there's got to be a way out, some doorway through the brick wall. Otherwise it's just a brick wall, and that's no fun.
