My mining faction has some manpower issues sorta, it's getting better, but mmh. I don't typically 'hire' escorts, but instead use other miners with swapped characters, prefer to mine for enough to fill a 5k with a friend, once we're full, he swaps to escort and I'm in the 5k. This is not as profitable, but extremely fun and a nice profit, if just for one run only (lose efficiency by moving back without there mining still being done).

The trick to escorts is not to protect, but to prevent, also make note of the pirates names, file 'reports' to your local police (curse you 11/10 for not screenshotting that guy!), get your escort to clear the guys out of the way.

I should think that all the guys with indie miner IDs are fair game for escorts even without the transport they're protecting within scanner range, despite the restrictions on the corp ID's saying 'protect only' and not hunt down. It's just how escorting has to be.
