Escorts run a lane ahead of the transport and warn the transport of pirates ahead, allowing you to divert away from the pirate.
Yeah, back when I was in a trader faction our escorting and convoy system was so effective we rarely lost a single transport or escort. Escorts fly ahead of the main group and if something happened, they'd distract them enough so we have time to slip by in the trades or plan an alternate route.
Escorts can very very effective, just ironically I think the best type of escorting ship is a bomber which shouldn't be. VHF need a faster way to kill bombers, and a faster way to kill things in general.
