I was, quite simply, shocked. Every small boy should know this fundamental bit of knowledge by age four, yet here this boy of at least twice that was admitting he had never learned. I said fortunate because of this precise shock. It turned my entire worldview on its head. I began to question the roles of parents in the instruction of their children. More than that, I began to realize that schools, no, society as a whole was configured in such a way as to set children up to fail.

I dropped out of school and bought a small ship with the remains of my school funds and summer job. I wandered around Bretonia, exploring and realizing just how pervasive this apathy towards education was. I stopped back at Freeport 4 to see my parents, only to see my father storming off to the hangar with luggage, closely followed by a tirade originating from my mother. She took one look at me, spat, cursed, and went back to what home was now hers, and hers alone. I never did see my father again. I do not believe he is dead; he is far too resourceful for that, but I do miss him sometimes.
