dropping Faction Tags

I have noticed that there is a trend of factions that deal with risky business (traders and pirates both) that have dropped faction tags from their ship names in order to avoid A. Traders avoiding them. B. Being hunted by pirates.

I've run across both sides of this... and I wonder at the pros and cons to this strategy.

Pro... makes it easier to get the business done.

Con... makes it harder, if not impossible, to prove faction numbers.

Someone, recently, pointed out that seeming rise in "indie" server population. Now running about, as I do, scanning and scrawling my little notebook of ships (yes that's right, I spot you I write down your name and faction ID in a note book so that if I spot you again I know who and what you are) I find that this isn't really the case most of the time. A lot of these new indie ships seem to be faction vessels that have dropped their tag... I wonder at this.

Right or wrong, and I am not passing judgment, what's your experience with this phenomenon?
