"Very well, Chris," she said with a smile, "I will give the special cooking instructions to the chef."
She then took the small toy, looking at it with much confusion. It didn't dawn on her that the toy was for Doreen's child so she thought it was some sort of gesture.
She handed the order to the chef and made her way to the young red head who was nursing a glass of soda for herself, "That man, he told me to give you this," she explained as she placed the toy in Doreen's hand.
She studied it. It was cute, a small Order fighter, but she was confused.
"He said it was out of respect for Doc," the waitress added.
Doreen then looked up at Chris but she wasn't happy. Thoughts raced through her mind, "How does he know I have a baby? Who told him? Who is this guy?" Shame began to fill her as she didn't want people knowing how young she truly was, the situation that she was in, the trouble her family was in and that she was a young, single mother as a result with no where to go. The shame turned to tears.
She sniffled as she grabbed some tissues, "Rhonda, watch the bar, please." With the tissues in one hand at her face, the toy in the other, she quickly walked out from behind the bar, out the front door and out of sight as she left for someplace private. Rhonda followed her as far as the doorway where the Klingon guard had already taken things the wrong way. She noticed him staring down the stranger in anger.
"It's OK, Kruk," she said placing her hand on his chest armor, "he didn't know. It's not his fault."
Away from everyone, she hid in a store room having locked the door behind her. The shame she felt made her cry harder, the mistrust she felt only made her feel more lonely. What was worse was that it was the result of a gesture made by a stranger in good faith who had no idea how hurt she was.
