A middle aged man walks into the recruitment centre, he doesn't look out of the ordinary but he has fire in his eyes, a look of vengeance and malice.
"Where do I sign up?"
The Staff Sargent looks up from his console.
"You're in the right place, sir. Name please."
"James Deschain" replies the man
"Deschain, hmm sounds Gallic to me..." The Sargent's hand moves ever so slightly to reach an unseen button under the desk
"Well it's not. It's a throwback from old Earth, a family name centuries old from a place called Scotland."
The Sargent's hand remains where it is. "How do I know you're not just a wannbe spy?"
"Do you really think I'd be that stupid to use my own godforsaken name?"
"I would hope not, sir, but we must still check ID. You do have it with you do you not?" A small smile pinched at his lips and the Sargent's voice was mocking in tone. It made Jim's blood hot, but he didn't bite back.
"Of course I do." he slid his chit across the desk with a fine finesse
"Hmm, let's see here... Born on Leeds, 36 years young, more than 2 decades flying and a small business owner... It doesn't list your current vessel here..."
"That's because it's not registered. She's the Arcadian."
"Arcadian, hmm.... a small Clydesdale freighter I see"
"She's not a freighter, she's an unregistered Gun Boat bought for my personal protection."
"I see, you realise it's a crime to captain a gunboat without the proper papers?"
"why do you think she was registered as a freighter and why do you think I'm here?"
"Why are you here Mr Deschain?"
"How long do you have?"
"Give me the abridged"
The Sargent's hand was still under the desk.
"I want to fight the Corsairs and end their reign in the Omegas and my father was tortured during the Kusari war, we never got him back. I want to make those bastards pay."
The Sargent's hand moved from the unseen button and grabbed a data slate.
"Fill this out with your details. I too was tortured by the Kusari, it's a fate worse than death. Your ship will have to be registered but mark my words son, with that surname of yours you had better keep that nose of yours clean."
