Nabokov made the quick adjustment and tried his best to maintain some level of sanity.
"Ma'am, I am from Planet New Berlin. Born of my mother, Kasia, and a father whom I have never met."
He took a breath, as he gained a bit of confidence, having delivered the last bit without problem.
"I do not work for anyone. I was unable to find a job with any of the major or minor Rheinland corporations after my graduation from junior college. To earn my meals, I have worked with the Red Hessians in a small supply capacity, but have not made significant ties with them."
The sweat became just slightly visible as he felt that his responses were getting more complex, and likely, more confusing.
"I came here to join the SCRA because I have seen how man treats one another under the worst of circumstances ..." he paused. "I have never had it easy in Rheinland. They say my background is that of the ancient Coalition. They used to point and laugh at my non-Germanic features -- ostracize me when I was young."
He looked down.
"Now, I'm just shuffled aside. Barred from jobs, kept out of the working Rheinland. Or what's left of it. The name-calling may have stopped, but I am certainly not part of anywhere I know in Sirius. My mother always told me to forge ahead -- to make things better for myself and others. I take this to heart."
Looking back up, the first hint of determination was visible in his eyes.
"I now know that man in Sirius is not the helping, caring being he may have been -- now or ever. He is a greedy being, working for himself and unable to overcome the most frivolous of differences amongst himself.
"I only learned recently that the SCRA exists -- through the random speculations of a drunk Hessian. I resolved myself to find the Coalition. Not just to reconnect with the past I have been marginalized because of -- but to find a place in this lifetime to create change."
He took a deep, nervous breath.
"I am here to fight for my past. And for man's future."
Only now did he notice his stance had slouched slightly, and he snapped back to attention, studying Ms. Vicenta's reaction.
