*****Part 6*****

----------------------------------------

[size=small]
***Fighter Bay 8; Inner-Airspace 3***

... 22 minutes later...

The Upholder Bomber, after a full patrol, now hovers above the fighter bay platform it took off from... Nothing of appearance has changed of the ship, showing it had taken no damage whatsoever, what with the shield array absorbing all those pot shots.

David: Crew Chief Pete, G here... Platform is all clear and Im ready to proceed with landing procedures, over.

Pete: Roger that, rookie. You may proceed to dock, over... *starts to chuckle to himself*

David: Pfah... Initiating landing in... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...

The ship slowly descended gracefully down the metallic platform, and a series of gravitation rings appear beneath the ship, helping to cushion the landing. Upon touchdown, the ship went from a roar in its engines, to a buzz, then to a hum, and finally all of its inner and outer systems stopped themselves altogether.

David: ... Systems deactivation successful, no signs of malfunction and showing all green. Deactivating secondary power core... Deactivating Primary Core in... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...

Primary power core deactivated... Double checking systems... All clear. Landing successful, Sarah Janes-lover Pete... Over and out.

Pete: Hey! Why you--- *David turns off intercom before he could finish his sentence*

David: *wearing a satisfactory smile* ... Take that, frakker... heheheh...

Alright, Mila. You go first...

Mila: * literally jumps out the cockpit with a big bounce, and lands with an acrobatic thud onto the fighter bay floor* Yattaaaa!!! THAT WAS AN AWESOME PATROL, Mr. Officer! Lets do it again, sometime!

David: *stepping off the ladder from the bombers cockpit* Heh... You still have your energy, I see...

Maybe later, Mila... But for now, Ill have to do a full report on the patrol before we go back to finding those people you met. Can you wait here while I go to that panel over there?

Mila: Sure, Mr. Officer! *finds a plasteel crate to sit on*

David: Thats good... Ill be back in a sec. *walks off*

As Mila took her time to sit down, her sharp ears couldnt help but notice some gossip going around a couple of LSF agents a number of meters from the elevator...

LSF-Agent 1: *barely audible* Hey, Georgy! Have you heard the news? That rookie Gs gonna take that head managers order back up his ass! And hes doing it just for the beer too!

LSF-Agent 2: What? No way! That rookie wouldnt dare...

LSF-Agent 1: Of course he would! That food distribution protocol has Gs food binges up in flames. And you know what its like when G cant have his steak?! You remember the last time---

LSF-Agent 2: DONT... Remind me, Mack... I still have nightmares from it... *shivers down his spine*

Well... Lets just hope G here doesnt disappoint, eh? That rookie probably couldnt navigate his way out of a paper sack even if he was armed with a GPS Unit, let alone lead that order back to the manager, hahahaaaah...

Mila was starting to get furious at what these LSF agents were spewing behind Mr. Officers back... But a sense that she might get herself into more trouble than what it was worth held her back to the crate. She decided to continue on listening to the Agents for the sake of finding something to do.

LSF-Agent 2: ... Say... You going over to play some pool tonight?

LSF-Agent 1: AGAIN?! I swear youre addicted to pool so much you rival an Outcasts need for Cardamine! Dont you ever do anything besides pool this, and pool that?

LSF-Agent 2: HEY! So what if I spend half my sleep-shift playing pool?! I get to do whatever the hell I want with my time, alright?!

Anyway... This aint gonna be an ordinary game, my friend, oh no! This time... The Kodiak Pool Club is hosting its annual tournament tonight, booh-yah! Some of the best pool-players will be trying to compete for the grand prize of a whole years worth of salary! And let me tell you this, Mack: a years worth of salary is a miiiighty-fine investment right there!

I cant wait to try my gen-yu-whine skills to the battlefield, bro! Itll be... sweeeeeet... *raises a thumb towards the other guy with a cool smile*

LSF-Agent 1: Heh... A years worth of--- *starts to think for a moment*... Yeah... now THAT... would be awesome...

As the LSF agents started to walk towards the elevator, too far for even Milas hearing range, David soon came back to the deep-in-thought Mila.

David: *raises an eyebrow, then places a hand on her shoulder* ... You alright Mi---

Mila: What is pool, Mr. Officer...?

David: *rears his head back from her sudden question* Huh? Pool...?

***Cafeteria; Back Room***

... 9 hours later...

The trio soon found themselves at the place known only by the LSF as the Back Room: its basically a room that had a fancy setting to it: it was a 120 square-meter area, had some old-fashion-looking lights hanging over the top, walls lined with white wash wood, the floor rolled in with some red carpet, and had a small, decent bar on one of its corners; there were some fancy tables that were justified with equally-elegant chairs, all of the former covered with some white table skirting and what-not.

In the middle of the room stood ominously a smooth, diamond-sanded pool table made of exotic Terumi wood. It was a sassy thing: the surface was as smooth as silk; the cloth on the gaming pad was green and unviolated from any scratch marks; it even had the Liberty Star carved outwards on the four corners of the table, the symbols showing off the boastful pride and joy of the nation.

By a wall was a weird rack of broken-in-half pool cues that had various markings and dates just above each of them: from first glance it would look like a history of the pool cue disasters they had in each game they did over the years; but there was a sign above that said, Ye Olde Predictions.

The room looked like it wasnt frequented often: it had cobwebs in a few places, and even the elegant pool table had a small layer of dust on its otherwise creamy surface.

However Leon, Mila and David found that it was slowly coming back to life: as more people came in the chairs were taken out and were occupied by eager LSF agents holding various drinks; the cobwebs were dusted off and disposed off; and the bartender now earned his name by finally opening the small bar, where a few of the agents wasted no time in asking for the strongest drinks for the night.

Mila soon spotted a perfect table to sit on: it was located somewhere just between the door and the Pool table and it was a bit dimly-lit to avoid any unwanted attention.

Mila: Woooow... Look at all the people gathered here! The smiles, the smells, the feel of the environment... Its all so classy, unlike the usual Kodiak boringness I see...

Leon: ... Yeah... This IS unusually casual, Mr. G...

David: *smiles expectedly* Heh... Im not surprised you two think so. This place here is where we host special gatherings here in the Kodiak.

Rumor has it amongst the LSF that there were some... discrepancies in the allocation of the funds, but Im sure if you ever ask anybody directly theyll quickly deny it, what with the Kodiak being a secret station and all...

But of course, were still human... We bleed, we die... And we most certainly DO get bored from time to time... So this room does fulfill that last prerequisite quite decently.

Although this room is open all the time, its not much frequented except for casual plays... But every year the Kodiak Pool Club hosts a large event wed like to simply call the Annual Pool Tournament. Those LSF agents all over the station who have a great sense of pool compete in this here tournament...

And the usual prize? Either a whole months-worth of beer rations guaranteed... or a whole years worth of someones salary gathered and pooled together from deposits in the Club Bank, depending on how well-oiled this here operation goes in that year.

It keeps spirits high and motivations in check, so High Command turns a blind eye to it. Sometimes it gets so thrilling even officers from other stations may suddenly come into the games just to get in the loop. *chuckles mildly to himself*

Mila: Woooooooooooow... Must be kewl, Mr. Officer!

Leon: Are you going to compete in these games, Mr. G?

David: Nah... Im heading to something of a... private matter...

Mila: *eyes start to sparke* Ooooh! Is it---

David: *positions his finger to his mouth, then whispers* Shhh! Thats a secret, alright? And dont tell Leonardo about it either.

Mila: *giggles slightly*

David: Well... Anyway, Im sure you guys wont just run off anywhere, right? The games are fun, and the drinks are sweet, so theres little to get bored in here.

Ill head off now, okay? *turns around to walk towards the door*

Leon: *observing his surroundings* ... Everyone sure is eager...

Suddenly, everyone goes silent as someone of seemingly-high stature walks over to the center of the room, leaning on the side of the pool table with a voice amplifier on his ear.

Man: *taps on his headphone* Hello? Is this thing on...? Okay then.

Welcome to the Annual Pool Tournament, Ladies and Gentlemen. This event is sponsored to you by the Kodiak Pool Club... and... by our lovely Military budget, folks. *a few hoot at his words*

Now then... For those still new to this fine culture of the Kodiak, the rules are simple... from tonight till the night after tomorrow, people from all across the station will be competing in a nine-ball tournament bout in the 4 preliminary rounds tonight, 2 semi-final rounds in the succeeding night... and an eight-ball finale on the last day for the grand prize of...

... 24 Million Credits! A full years worth of salary for any hard-working, donut-eating, Nomad-ass-kicking privateer worth his weight in salt! *a louder reply of hollering follows*

So before we begin, as tradition of the Kodiak Pool Club, and because we have lots of equipment to replace whatever breaks... *people snicker left and right* ... The Champion of the Year is tasked to begin this wonderful event with the ceremonial Pool Cue Prediction! Hes to break the Pool Cue in half, and we get to see a small taste as to what we can expect this year... The more uniform the break, the more heated the years gonna be...

Okay Gens... *in comes a comparatively-skinny guy, and proceeds to snap the pool cue hes given in half; everyone is shocked beyond recognition to see that it broke so very equally*

... By the maker... LOOK AT THIS, FOLKS!!! Just witness that super-clean shaven cut! Its almost as if a saw was used to break this cue in two! This years gonna be a totally-awesome match, folks! Anyone could be a potential winner this year!

Right then... Without further ado... as the official announcer till God do me part...

... MAY THE CONTEEEEEEEST... BEGIN!!! *exits the light as the people cheer on in delight and excitement*

***Head Managers Office; Level 4***

The current Head Manager of the Kodiak, Harold Lukas, was a suitable man of taste: that night he was wearing a navy-blue business suit, with a matching navy blue tie and black, cleanly-polished shoes; his hair was short, but made to a clean tailors cut; he looked like he was somewhere between his 40s and 50s, where signs of age wrinkling started to show. His eyes were formal, but decently pleasant, and his hands were busy writing reports on his own PDA.

The office he had was comfortable: it had its otherwise drab, metallic walls painted skyblue; the desk he had was of decent make; and there seemed to be a minty-fresh scent scattered in the air.

A low buzz on the door was heard on his nearby intercom, signaling that someone was before the door.

Harold: Hmmm... Could it be...?

... Come in then...

David: *walks in casually* ... Hello... Mr. Lukas. *a grin appearing before his face*

Harold: *a grin appears on his face as well, but this one was wry* ... David...

David: Im sure you are already familiar as to why Im here... Dont you?

Harold: Ive heard the rumors, yes...

... But I never expected someone like you to really DO have the balls to do this... Im surprised, David... Truly I am...

David: Ill take that as a compliment, thanks... *he cracks his knuckles noisily*

Harold: Actually, I was hoping we could talk about this more... civilized-like.

David: Id love to... Buuuut...

... Wouldnt wanna disappoint my fans now, would I? Plus, Im getting beer for it.

Harold: *his eyes narrow* Hmmm...

If thats how you wanna take things, David... Fine... Well play it your way. *stands up from his chair, his fists coming up in preparation of a fight*

David: *laughs maniacally* ... Ill have it no other way... Sir...
