I would never mock the magic wand, because I use it all the time. But it must be used with care and respect.

I totally agree to that point. Generally speaking this guidline can be used for any tool and filters offered in photoshop.
Any tool (filter, bevel & emboss, lens flare whatever..) has a right to exist if it is used in that way that it does not appear obviously though creating a nice effect.

Another debatable thing is the shameless use of "seen-to-often-fonts" like Comic Sans MS... :wacko:
