I thought the only reason we dropped the 10/10 fiber connection on the old server was because the DDOS attacks fried the gateway. We were then going to replace it, running on a temporary 10/2 ADSL backup until it could be replaced. When did that plan go out the door and why?
The plan went out of the door because we were concerned about the amount of time the server was offline; both in terms of frequency and duration. For this reason, I moved the server to a rented host.
We moved the server back to the original box at a new (free) location when it become clear that the rented server was not fast enough. Unfortunately this connection dropped for some reason and even though it was fixed I believed that the probability of it happening again was moderately high and so I moved the server to a better rented host.
The main issue with free hosting is that fast turn around 24/7 support and guarantee of service doesn't exist. This is excellent value for money but it makes it very hard to say when the server will be up again. Rented hosting guarantees a particular level of service. Whether they actually succeed at this is debatable.
I think (hope) that we can afford to fund a rented host. If we can't afford it or it doesn't give us decent value for money then I'll get rid of it.
