Into the Abyss

The image Middleton had of his drop was a perfect forward roll, bringing assault rifle to bear in a matter of seconds. In cold reality, he had no forward momentum. He was heading straight down. Any observer would have described his descent from the Social Credit as a wild tumble.

And it wasn't a tumble onto the open road either. His destination was a poorly constructed building - no, more of a shanty house hastily pieced together like a jigsaw with wooden planks roughly the same size - with a roof having suffered years without maintenance. He gave out a yell as he crashed on and through the roof and into the shack, his fall being cushioned by small bundles of fur.

He lay there for several seconds, completely still. Whoever told him to jump at that point was going to be thrown out of the Social Credit over an irradiated lake. His thoughts of sweet revenge were interrupted by the yawning of a creature in the shack. One of the many he had just disturbed from its slumber.

Quickly he pushed himself to his feet, brought his assault rifle to bear and turned the mounted flash light on. He spun three-sixty degrees on the balls of his feet, quickly locating an exit out of the room. And then he let the light show him what was on the floor. One pair of eyes stared out from behind the barrel of the assault rifle. Thirty pairs stared back at him.

Rabbits. Tens and tens of rabbits. As he swivelled again, he quickly recalculated. Hundreds. He looked at his feet, and saw the crushed bodies of several rabbits from where he'd landed. He reached for his radio.

'Confirmed drop. But I have...'

At the same time, as if they were controlled by one entity, the jaws of the rabbits were dislocated from their sockets, they hissed at him with long devil-horn tongues, before drawing saliva and preparing to spit at his face. He dropped to the deck as globs of acidic spit flew over him, splattering on the walls and back onto the rabbits who shook it off.

The wooden walls began to dissolve, the entire structure creaking eerily as the poorly maintained supports began to receive more stress. The rabbits were confused for a moment, before glancing down and seeing Middleton leaping to his feet and barging through one of the walls onto the main road, pulling the pin of a frag grenade and aiming it in the general direction of the shack.

It rolled in through the hole he'd made in the shack wall as the first rabbits started pouring out to give hot pursuit. Middleton expected a big boom. No big boom. Whoever made that grenade was being dumped in an irradiated lake when he got back to Zvezdny.

He ran faster.
