Mercinary vs Freelancer

Number 2 is very very wrong. Many mercenaries are very well known for switching sides, it's the defining trait of a mercenary.

Really the difference is simply a personal choice one, in how the two are perceived. Freelancers are perceived as people mostly working for themselves, who take what jobs they want on the conditions they want, where they want. Mercenaries are better known for hunting bounties and escorting ships. Generally combat-oriented roles. They also usually operate in a limited spacial area, though some mercenaries will work all over Sirius. (Pro tip, except for groups, usually the better paid independent mercs are ones who work for a select group of people/factions with whom they have personal relations.)
