In my, occasionally humble, oppinion, it is nice to make a crew for your ship, and write down some small things for them, that make them special.

As for RPing a speaking character.. mm... well, you could just introduce yourself when you start to talk with that person:

"Richards here. Maltese mooring control, we need to connect our umbilical with you, please transmit telemetry data to my navigator"

"Navigator Adams here Malta, telemetry received."

this would make it easier when you talk a lot with one person, instead of constantly typing his/hers/it's name.
