That comparison is just... random. And seemingly unrelated to anything he said. I think a better example would be if Osama bin Laden went to an uninhabited island with a bunch of terrorist friends. Then they gave themselves a new name and renounced all past ties to any state.
Any debate I'm seeing seems to stem from the definition of Bretonian. Some people are taking it purely in a cultural way while others are seeing it as an ethnicity or nationality or whatnot.
If you really get down to it, there is probably very little overarching characteristics that really combine the houses' populations compared with regional (system and planet) differences. Maybe we should say that Gaians are Edinburghish (though Islayan sounds nicer).
