Nothing is known about his childhood except his birthplace since his parents were murdered while moving cargo. The LPI worked hard to find out the who had murdered them, but the investigation met its dead-end. Baker was taken care by his Mother's Friend, Angelina. She was very kind to him, although she never told of his parents' death.
He eventually accepted Angelina as his mother, she loved him very much. After he finished school on Planet Manhattan, he wanted to be a pilot. So, Baker went to the Manhattan Flight School and gained a Type P.O. License, which limited his flying to Planet Manhattan only.
After the age of eighteen, he applied for a Civilian ID. He got through the tests and gained his license. Shortly after, he applied to become a Liberty Navy pilot, but he was rejected because of he failed the psychological test. The doctor concluded that Matt was driven by revenge. Angelina blamed herself; she assumed that Matt became this way because she never told him about his parents death. In fact, when Baker was in school he had almost killed a kid.
One day, an L.P.I. officer came to their home. He was there to tell them that the L.P.I. had finally found the murderers after all these years. Baker over-heard the conversation. He was not angry with Angelina, but he wanted revenge. He stole a Liberty Navy Guardian Vessel and undocked from Manhattan Orbit. Baker searched far and wide for his parents' murderers, until one day he found them and killed them. Although Baker didn't stop at that. He killed every single Liberty Rogue he saw on his way to Manhattan. He believed that he did a good deed and when he was stopped by the authorites he was just charged of stealing and was in prison for a year.
After prison, Baker was forbidden to join the Navy, so he started freelancing. After he had heard of him, Mr. Trenton offered him a job at Universal Shipping Incorporated's Social Services Office. Baker accepted the offer and also applied for a position on the U.S.I. trading vessel "Dallas" - Code-4787*USI*LIB.
