BSG is such an example

All the battlestars we have have a history - bot RP and server - related.

The Warhammer -resurrected after a longer pause and replaced the Nemesis as flagship.
The Valkyrie - Oldest battlestar still in service (no remakes, NCC or anything since construction)
The Galactica - belongs to our currently inactive member - needs to be looked after, previously it changed owners some 3 times and took part in most major battles of the Planetform age.
The Nemesis - The fist battlestar to enter service with the IMG tag, first to get mk VIII armor and the fleet's flagship for months - untill Warhammer replaced it. Now it's sitting in drydock and shows up when it's absolutely needed. Built for the cash, that ame from selling its owner's private corair battleship (I miss that ship like hell)
The Pegasus - Belongs to Doom. Entitled to own it as the president. Same as above - a private dreadnought bought a battlestar
The pride of Kobol - Shared account ship - access to it is granted to new members, who show skill and dedication. (no need to let the noobs buid their own hips for gargantuan sums)

All those ships show up on rare occasions (only once I saw them all in space) and even if - it's a photo opportunity, not battle. largest number that ever took part in combat was in omicron gamma once - Hammer, Peg, Galatica nd the now disbanded Astraeus battled an equal (or higher) number of Outcast/Blood dragon/AW dreadnoughts and juggernauts. All were lost, but same applied to the enemy warships :P. Haven't seen more than 2 at a time ever since.Ther's simply barely an occation to roll them all out and even if there is - we go with a 1-2-4 pattern 1 BS, 2 CA's/GB's and 4 fighters/bombers - makes the force look reasonably and multi-functionally.

The problem apart from accessability of the heaviest warships - is their owners' mentality. Spammin large numbers of dreadnoughts or outmoving the blobs with bombers and gunboats? Less experienced players prefer the hip they are hard to kill in - the bigger the better. The more experience - the larger the reliance on manouverability and evasion.

Personally- I prefer destroyers. In most cases I'm flying lone seek'n destroy missions around Sirius and that ship type suits this style best. What it can't beat, it can outrun. But if we're going in numbers agains a task force of a few capships-regardless of type - bombers and fighters are the choice. theoretically, they can take out any number of capships without losses. What point rolling out easy-to-hit battleships then and risk losing them?
