Gauss weapons are a soundless high speed very low refire rate weapon that suspends a projectile in the air through the use of magnetic fields, then propels it to incredible speeds by altering the magnetic fields in one end of the projectil.
true, the point of the matter is boiled down to the fact that a projectile is "launched" through a series of magnets.
That said, Ballistics would apply to the weapon, and in theory, yes, you could fire a railgun (not a gauss gun like mentioned above) as fast as you can put the projectiles in the tubes. BUT, that said, you STILL can refire a laser or a tachyon beam alot faster than manually loading shells into a magnetic tube. Hence why I say they should have a slower refire =)
EDIT: As to Gauss being soundless, Its only soundless until the projectile breaks the sound barrier. Then the projectile itself creates the sound. Also, I imagine a gauss weapon would require tremendous ammounts of energy, so the vibration of the plates within a transformer would make a humming aswell, but I also suppose its insignifigant unless the enemy has ultra hearing. Which then is the least of their worries cuz the projectile breaking the sound barrier would make their ear drums bleed =D
