Its a free game with an evolving history, revel in it. You won't see something like this ever again.
I certainly hope not!
As far as I can see the intention of 4.86 is to make the game more attractive to certain types of player, probably by enticing them over from PvP and Total War servers and it should be great for those who want to fight battles and PvP duels. For those who want to participate in a thriving community, it is far less attractive. Why bother with with traders, miners, etc? Why not just concentrate on fighters and warships? Most factions will no longer be relevent to the storyline and can easily be done without, so why bother with them. Interstellar commerce will have to go to a war footing, because even if your faction is not directly involved in the conflict it will have to follow economic demands. Food prices will soar, as will raw materials necessary for ship building or other military service requirements, while prices of non-essentials will plummet.
Traders will realistically avoid the contested areas because they could well be shot at by both sides in case they are supplying the 'other side', so commerce will come to a standstill in virtually half of the Sirius systems. Only convoys will be able to travel in these systems and then only if escorted by military forces, which will make them fair game to be attacked by the opposing military forces. The exception being for an occasional trader that is desperate to make a profit and even then it will only be for those using small freighters as no reputable trader is going to risk their transports in such areas.
My own situation as such a trader is that with the Gallia/Bretonia/Tau systems in conflict (with Kusari and Liberty likely to be dragged into it) on the left of the map and the Nomad/Wild/Order conflict still in effect (and there is no way it should not be) on the right, there is nowhere left to realistically run a business in Disco anymore. I have tried playing in the Gallia systems and decided to avoid them llike the plague (as it seems most other players are doing, because they are always virtually empty!) and if 4.86 becomes a reality I will most certainly be not only avoiding them, but almost everything to the left of Magellan/Cortez.
I think I will just start up a new character as a Nomad, develope it up to a Capital ship and then fly down to Bretonia and offer my services to fight the Gallic invaders.
After all, why shouldn't I? "Its a scifi story ......... Its a free game with an evolving history, revel in it!"
Or perhaps I should just start looking for another mod that isn't only looking to cater to the 'I want to shoot it!' crowd.
I just hope that 4.86 is a long, long time in developement, so that I get plenty of time to enjoy Disco while it is still a good Rp server!
