"We interrupt your regular broadcast to bring you the following news from the Liberty Navy. One of our correspondants, James Erland, is live outside Fort Bragg Naval Base. James, what's the situation?"
"Thanks David. The traffic you can see behind me has been going since sunrise, heavy vehicles of all kinds coming and leaving this, the central base of operations of the Navy. We've been getting unconfirmed reports of some type of assassination attempt that may have happened over 24 hours ago. Sources initially pointed to the target being one unnamed member of the High Command, but we've received more details suggesting that all of them were targets. Our source claimed that this could have been some kind of coup attempt."
"Any details, James?"
"Not much. As you can imagine, the Navy are being tight-lipped, having yet to formally acknowledge an incident let alone issue a statement. However, what we do know points to a Captain, Samuel Zanders, as an instigator. We've been told that, upon heavily secure raids on the residences of this serviceman, documents were found giving details of many officers serving in the Navy, not only those of the High Command."
"What do you think it could mean for the Navy? Is the war taking its toll on morale?"
"It's hard to say David, the information we're getting is sketchy at best, and without a statement, we have no way of knowing anything for sure."
"Wasn't Captain Zanders a well-respected figure within the Navy?"
"Yes, he was. Captain Zanders' record has been classified recently by the Navy, but prior to that, his superiors claimed that he served with distinction, climbing relatively quickly to the rank of Captain, the highest outside the High Command. He had no incidents of insubordination or misconduct to his name, and to top it off, was the overseer of the Navy's recently begun training programme."
"Have you received any information on the wherabouts of Captain Zanders?"
"I stress that we only have unconfirmed reports right now, but we've been led to believe that an as yet unidentified male body has been found within Fort Bragg, matching Captain Zanders' description."
"Could Captain Zanders have been part of a wider plot by the Chancellor to destabilise Liberty's war effort?"
"It's hard to say, we don't know that much and what we do know consists only of sketchy unconfirmed reports, which mostly lack in detail. I'll get back to you on that, David."
"A worrying turn of events at Naval HQ, James. Thankyou for the information."
"No worries David. From here at Fort Bragg, Manhattan, it's back to the studio."
"In other news, the long list of transfer requests between parts of the forces has been published. The well-known miscreant Maximo Valeri is among the list of transfers, specifically to the 214th. This squadron has in the past taken serious casualties, and it is hoped that this transfer will enable the Navy to make better use of his astrobatic skills in defense of the New York system. However, insiders have told us that the real reason for his transfer was due to his rampant insubordination and misconduct, and that the Navy is attempting to sideline his behaviour in order to repair their image.
And now, the weather with Susan Partridge. Lots of blue on the map I see..."
