On the flip side to this, a million different characters means less time on each individual one, which means less time for any official factions you may join, which means inactivity.

As long as you can get a taste of what each character is and just how it plays its part in the world, you're doing well enough. I do have a few "main" characters for myself which I spend plenty of time on (or spent, back when I had FL on my computer), but there's usually an hour or two left over that I can spare on a different character altogether.

So I make a new guy every now and then to join in on some other group that's largely unknown to me. Often I'll keep them only for a few weeks, play around and say "That was interesting, but not my cup of tea." Sometimes I'll find one that I really enjoy and keep him around a bit longer. In fact, just before my hard drive died, I was having a lot of fun with a Scimitar-flying Lane Hacker who tried to rob transports twenty times bigger than himself. Before then, I'd never even considered being a Hacker. But I got a real kick out of flying that guy.

You can continue to play dress-up without detracting too much from "official" characters. People do it all the time. Of course, it can take several months to get through all of the various factions and groups within Discovery, but we have plenty of time here.
