Re: consequences of death. Discovery is like those old GI Joe episodes where a Cobra HISS would become a cloud of fire and shrapnel, then 2 guys would come running out of the smouldering debris. Unless somebody takes the time to target and shoot the pilot's cargo pod, nobody dies. PC escape pods are the ones that get away:). Yeah, it says "So-and-so was killed by an npc", but that has to be a colloquialism cause everybody sees the guy flying around the next day in a shiny new ship. Speaking of which...

Re: recovery of gear after "death". If you need a cheesy excuse, here it is... everybody is covered by Interspace Commerce. Even the bad guys. It might be really stupid for an insurance company to do business with pirates, but lets face it; a company that insures ANYONE in a place as chaotic as Sirius have very poor judgement. If you get shot down, well, that's what you bought your policy for. If you fly yourself into a minefield or a gravity well... uh... insurance fraud. Everybody does it:P
