Chapter 4

Travel companions

On leeds, Gilgamesh met up with the Bretonian Guildmaster. Or at least his physical form. The Bretonian Guildmaster was in SA. It turned out Devirgo wanted him delivered to Rostock. Gilgamesh offered to be part of the escort in order to stay close to Stoat. He needed to make sure Stoat would not be offed by anyone before Damoclass had met with him. Stoat was being transported onboard the Last Chance, headed for Rostock. There were 2 more escorts apart from Gilgamesh. These were the hunter Volke and the 33rd squadron member Amber. The small group left for Omega 15. The first leg of the trip was uneventful. The route would be: Leeds, Cambridge, Omega 3, Omega 7, Omega 11, Dresden and finally Omega 15. The plan was to stay off the beaten track. The plan was nice. Reality wasn'€™t.

In omega 11 they came. The men lost to aliens. The remorseless parasites of Sirius. The Wilde. The Hunter group was under heavy attack as it tried to get the transport carrying Stoat to safety. The 33rd Manta was shot down as it tried to hold off 2 Wilde fighters at once. Gilgamesh and Volke were busy shooting at one of the Scorpions that was attacking the transport carrying Stoat. The chase lasted all the way to Rostock with fighting going on every meter of the way. Near Rostock, the destroyer Mary Poppins appeared and the Wilde turned tail. The group had safely made it to Rostock whilst losing 1 ship.

Gilgamesh climbed out of the cockpit of his '€˜Wasp'€™ and looked up to the form of his fighter. It was dented and had burn holes all over the hull from the unearthly weapons used by the Wilde. He turned his attention to Stoat'€™s body, which was being loaded onto yet a smaller tranport, headed for Capetown as Gilgamesh overheard. He reached for his special comms unit that had but 1 line: directly to Damian Damoclass.

'€˜They'€™re moving him to Capetown. He'€™s in SA. I think DeVirgo is up to something with him. We may be too late boss.'€™

Then the reply came with the cold, business like voice of Damoclass:

'€˜Nonsense. DeVirgo won'€™t kill his precious toy off just like that. Go to Capetown. Keep an eye on things. I will make my way down to Rostock. I'€™ll contact you later, as soon as I can get out of this stinky station they call Dabadoru.'€™

The signal cut off. Gilgamesh looked as he saw the small ship carrying Stoat leave the docks to fly to Capetown. Wasting no time, he climbed back in his Wasp and followed suit, under the guise of needing equipment from the Capetown arms dealer.

Chapter 5

Setting the stage

Several days passed. Doctors and other whitecoats would not leave Stoat'€™s side. It wasn'€™t until DeVirgo himself showed up at Stoat'€™s that Gilgamesh was suddenly all ears. As DeVirgo entered the room, Gilgamesh tried to use all his cunning and spy equipment to no avail. Something was producing a jamming signal. Gilgamesh sat in a dark corner of Capetown, with earplugs in, listening to nothing but white noise. The only device working properly was his spy camera he had positioned near the door of Stoat'€™s treatment room. It constantly showed 2 guards stationed at either side of the door, standing in the hallway. Gilgamesh was quite annoyed as he was probably missing out on all the juicy parts of the talk between Stoat and DeVirgo.

'€˜Frak this dung...'€™

Gilgamesh mumbled as he sat in utter darkness. An engineer who passed by looked with large eyes at the swearing of the darkness, and then moved on figuring he must have had imagined it. Gilgamesh kept looking at his small videoscreen, showing the hallway and the door to Stoat'€™s medical room. He was fiddling with a silvery knife in one hand and held the video unit in the other as the screen suddenly showed the door opening, and Stoat leaving, followed by DeVirgo. The 2 guards followed suit.

'€˜Gilgamesh jumped at finally seeing something productive happening and jumped up, forgetting about the knife in his hand. It cut him deep in his right hand.

'€˜frak it!'€™ he yelled at the pain.

A hunter who passed by stopped and looked at the swearing that came out of nowhere. Then he shrugged and walked on. Behind him Gilgamesh emerged from the shadows of his hiding place and left for the hallway where his target was walking. He soon made it to the hallway in question, snatched his spycam up from underneath the security camera he had placed it under and sped down the hallway. At the end, he saw 2 familiar looking guards round a corner. He gave chase and caught up with the 4 men walking towards Chapman'€™s as it would turn out. Stoat and DeVirgo sat down and the 2 guards stood at about 2 meters distance. Drinks were brought to the Guildmasters as Gilgamesh took position behind a pillar in the bar and rolled a small marble like object underneath a bench near the table where the 2 Guildmasters were sitting. This time the bug did its work. Gilgamesh could hear every word. He left the bar, earplug in his ear, hidden underneath his shawl and took up position in the hallway leading to Chapman'€™s. He leaned back against a wall, produced the silvery knife again (which now had a reddish tint on the blade) and started fiddling with it again whilst listening in on the talk between the 2 Guildmasters. What he heard worried him. Not because of morals or any other reason any sane man would be worried, but because what he heard was directly opposed to what Damoclass had planned. Gilgamesh took out his secure comms unit again and contacted Damoclass.

'€˜Boss. Trouble. Seems DeVirgo beat you to it. He'€™s offering Stoat a shotgun job as Wilde marketing manager. Either that or a shot in the head.'€™

'€˜Hm... That is unfortunate. I was hoping I'€™d have more time. No matter, we'€™ll just speed things up. I'€™m at Rostock. I want Stoat here as well. Make sure he gets to Rostock. Alone. Tell him I want to talk to him, but be discrete about it. No gunfights, shootouts or breakouts. Old man DeVirgo is around and I don'€™t want that sly rat to find out. I'€™ll make sure our precious Bretonian Guildmaster is not hampered on his way here. You just make sure he gets out of his quarters and comes to Rostock.'€™

'€˜Right boss.'€™

Gilgamesh turned off the comms unit and listened to the raging of Stoat at DeVirgo. It seemed the talk was all but over. A few moments later the bar doors opened and Stoat came striding out, followed by 2 guards. Gilgamesh put away the knife and started moving as well, towards the Bretonian Guildmaster. As they were 2 meters separated Gilgamesh leaned slightly inwards and as the 2 men almost passed one another, they bumped into each other.

'€˜Sorry'€™ Stoat mumbled and he walked on, not even noticing who he had bumped into. Gilgamesh was immediately pushed back by 1 of the guards.

'€˜Back off you, keep distance'€™ the guard snarled.

Gilgamesh put up his hands as to gesture he was no threat.

'€˜My bad. I wasn'€™t paying attention.'€™

'€˜Keep moving'€™ the guard snarled again and he walked off to catch up to his colleague and Stoat who was about to round the corner headed for his quarters.

'€˜Be seeing ya...'€™ Gilgamesh muttered as he checked his empty hand. Stoat didn`t have a keycard on him. Gilgamesh hated dna scanners. They were a pain to open. So he decided to do it the old fashioned way. He made his way to the hallway where Stoat'€™s quarters were located. He then walked up to the desk of a secretary, no doubt one of the Guildmaster'€™s.

'€˜Mind if I borrow this?'€™ Gilgamesh asked as he took a blank piece of paper from the desk. The secretary looked up, and was stunned for a second by the oddly dressed man in front of her. '€˜no... no- eh, go ahead'€™ she replied.

'€˜Thanks'€™ Gilgamesh replied and picked up a pen as well and wrote something on the paper:

We need to talk. In private. When you head back to Leeds, I'll accompany you. - Damian

To Gilgamesh, it was obvious that in these cases, old fashioned crude methods would serve him best. No sneaking around, no scrambled electronic messages or nonsense with breakouts via tunnels. Good old paper messages are impossible to intercept when delivered in person. Which was exactly what Gilgamesh would do. He went back to the hallway where Stoat'€™s quarters were located. There, in front of the doors, were the 2 guards from before. Gilgamesh made sure his shawl was tighly bound around his face as he produced one of his favorite toys: a small rod emitting quite potent amounts of KO-gas on both ends when activated. He hid the rod up his right sleeve and walked towards the doors of Stoat'€™s quarters. As he was 4 meters away, the guard who had scolded Gilgamesh earlier noticed him approaching. He turned towards Gilgamesh and his collegue, alarmed by the motion of his collegue, did the same.

'€˜You again? Hold it right there. Don'€™t move.'€™

Gilgamesh checked the hallway in front of him. It was empty, except for the 2 guards looking at him. Behind him, the hallway was also empty. His hand itched to reach for his photon blaster. But he wasn'€™t allowed to kill. Not now. So, crudeness all the way he decided.

'€˜I'€™m here to help Stoat escape under orders of Guildmaster Damoclass who is working on betraying you all to take over supreme command of the Guild. Just thought I'€™d let you know.'€™

The guards were so dumbfounded at this sudden outburst of ridiculous honesty that they were off-guard for a second. A second was all Gilgamesh needed. He had dashed the distance between him and the first guard in no time at all and grabbed him by the throat as he spun around, the guard still in his grasp and slammed the first guard into the second who could only utter a surprised gasp as the rod slid out of Gilgamesh'€™ right sleeve and he activated it near the 2 guards'€™ heads. The rod made a puffing sound and a bluish gas was shot into the faces of both guards. They moaned and dropped down, unconscious. Knowing the guards wouldn'€™t remember what had happened to them due to the gas, he grabbed one of the guards'€™ hands and placed in on the dna scanned. It bleeped but the doors didn'€™t open. Gilgamesh looked at the number pad next to the scanner. He hated numberpads. They were also a pain to open. He decided to hack the damn thing and be done with it. Speed was of the essence. If someone were to walk into the hallway now and see 2 unconscious guard at the feet of a masked man trying to break into the quarters of a Guildmaster, it would be very hard to explain. After fiddling with it for 6 seconds, the doors slid open.

Stoat was standing in the middle of his quarters, looking at Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh looked back, then produced the written message and threw it at Stoat without saying a word. Stoat caught the paper and looked up as Gilgamesh had already disappeared.
