From the house, the soft cry of a crying baby could be heard. "Ekusukyu-zumi," said Midori as she stood up and hastily walked inside.
"My daughter is awake," Doc said smiling.
"Thank you, Jim, for your praise," he continued, "fact is, I was once like so many, thinking with my guns more than logic. Between Eris, new lungs and thus, a new life and Midori, well, I have something to live for. So, rather than killing people, I chose to help them."
"I know little of the Lane Hackers," commented Doc on Jim's reference to them, "I've had little interaction with them except for one long ago who gave me some burn trauma equipment that is now used aboard Med.Force. It quite literally has made a huge difference in the lives of many."
"I'm going to help you in your project in whatever way I can," he declared, "so long as we agree not to forcefully condition people's minds against their own will."
He stood up, "But, before we do, I'm going to evaluate that back of yours myself at Canaria Medical. If nothing else, I'd like the satisfaction of fixing it.
As he was standing, Midori returned holding his daughter, Emiko, whom she handed to Doc's outstretched hands. Emiko had the "just woke up" look.
"Jim," said the smiling Doc, "this is my daughter, Emiko, one of the greater pleasures of my life."
After some coaxing, Doc managed to get a smile out of her.
