I personally like light fighters more than any other ship... It's just too bad they're so useless in most situations (most situations being a fight against capships or groups of VHFs). They can take out any other fighter solo (with a hellava lot of work), and they're good at surviving for a long time vs. larger groups, but otherwise are rather useless.
heh...i was one of the VHFs on the other side...i was surprised when i saw so many big ships going after me...at start of that fight i was one fighter against two battleships, gunboat, two cruisers and one fighter...then i called for backup...
but you see...i train my guys to use VHFs against big ships...we learn how to dodge, when to fire, how to team up and all work together...in some practice fights we killed really large feel of SA caps using only vipers and one bomber...
however people here are right...unexperienced player will always like to fly in big ships...it gives them "better protection"...well...it usually does...against NPCs..
I have battleship...and i know how to fly it really well...but i cant remember when was the last time i used it...i am expecting every time after inactive player wipe that it will be gone...someone said that BSG has 6 battleships..hmm....not even i knew that we have so many..my Peggy might seriously became a museum...
most of the time i am using two ships..fighter (usually viper) and my trusted rouge GB...almost never i don't have need to use anything bigger then GB...
but main question is how to limit battleship use...practically...that is almost impossible...and definitely impossible without player wipe...at least battleship wipe...
i agree that battleships should be limited...considering faction size and alignment...even Battlecruisers and cruisers should be limited...i wouldn't make limit on GBs...
but u will always have problem with private "freelancer" battleships that fly under Merc ID...they still can be "hired" for certain faction...
i would reduce battleship number like this:
1. player wipe - self explains
2. raising battleship prices to skies as well as equipment for them - make total price for buying and equipping battleship over 1,9 bill..no matter what player cant buy it alone
3. reduce profit from trading and make longer trade runs - related to above, whole faction/nation needs to trade for one single battleship...faction acts like team
4. sell them on only one place in Sirius and possibly on guard base - impossible to buy ship without proper tag and alignment
5. limiting number of battleships per faction - self explains
6. limiting number of capital ships per account - self explains
so it will became very hard to buy battleship if u are freelancer...and eventually when freelancer buys it...then he deserved it...
