Holmes managed to turn around just in time to see the last two Alliance soldiers go down.
"Ricardo, Federov, hold your positions!"
He heard the whir of the elevator going back to wherever it had come from.
I don't think so.
He jumped up and raced to the elevator door, slinging his rifle in the process of unholstering his combat knife.
Ian slid the blade in the door crack and yanked it sharply sideways just wide enough to get his hand in.
The whirring started again as the elevator began to come back up.
Holding the door open, he yanked a grenade from his belt, pulled the pin with his teeth and tossed it in.
He fell back as the car came into view, the doors opening, and an Alliance soldier raising his rif-
The top of the elevator exploded, giving Ian just enough time to see the next squad impaled by long steel fragments before the whole car shuddered and fell.
Holmes stood, only dimly aware of the excruiating pain resounding from his legs.
He looked down.
Weel, tha'll hurt in the morning.
His uniform pants were shredded, and little bits of shiny metal spattered his legs, just barely embedded in the surface of his skin, although it didn't appear serious.
He gave Ling another salute, and then returned to his command, limping a bit.
