I've played my share of classic games (C&C Red Alerts, Fallout, Doom etc).

Your argument is based upon the fact that older titles had more imagination than modern titles. This is simply not true. The only thing that made you think they're more creative is the fact that there weren't similar titles which, in comparison, makes them dull and repetitive. It's true that gameplay is more important than graphics, but the point is that technology limitations restrict the level of detail in graphics and this isn't a deciding factor in quality of games as it'll continue to advance. Older games have the advantage of using original ideas first simply because they existed first. You can't disregard contemporary games just because they remind you of someone else's idea.

I can think of plenty of well written, nicely produced and directed modern games and franchises off my head. It's not just about the artistic value, but also the enjoyment they provide to players.

- Metal Gear Solid series
- Mirror's Edge
- Ico/Shadow of the Colossus
- Prince of Persia series
- Mass Effect series
- The Elder Scrolls series
- Fallout series

All of the games I mentioned have brilliant replay values, well written plots, smooth gameplay and provide an immersive experience. Hell, MGS even crosses the line between a game and a movie.
