Certain circumstances:

So you're sitting in your battleship on a lane to shoo away pirates.
A pirate comes along and plainly wants to pirate there.
You tell it to go away.
It tells you to suck a fat one.

At this point, you fire everything and it's apparently a gank. But in this case, and cases like these where you give them a chance to leave, if they spit it in your face, it's obvious that they want to be hit by something very big or very numerous. In fact, something like this just happened to me; I gave some folks the chance to go away, and they chose to shoot me instead.

Another one:

So you and your friends, lets say six fighters, see a trader getting shot at by a bomber.
One fighter versus one bomber is in the favour of the fighter already, so six should make short work of it.
But then the trader wont last that long.

At this point, I would tell everyone to take out that bomber, since our objective is no longer to kill the pirate, but to make sure the trader survives. If the trader dies, we've not done our job (as law enforcement) regardless of whether the pirate dies afterwards.

One last one:

If they're the kind of individual who used to run into the sun with their GB to escape from fighters before the sun damage was increased, or who cruises off the plane and trolls you in local/PM while they do it. Then I log on something big, or a lot of people log on, and kick their ass.
