Make it just good old fashioned pvp without the contrived rule-drama. If you have people dedicated enough to RP'ing anyway they shouldn't need to stop and complain about some rule that may or may not make sense anyway.

Plus there's entire list of rules left anyway so just keep that to make the 'have to have rules' people happy.

Sure, let me go around as a homicidal maniac who kills everything and everyone. He was trained in ninjitsu to be ultra silent. He kills his victims without a word. He's listed on every criminal database as The.Silent.Killer.

Sounds like a perfectly fine RP, a psycho in real life wouldn't necessarily tell people he was gonna kill them.

And it can be dealt with by everyone else just RPing too. Everyone FR5 them, police arrest them, ect.

It's settled then. Tongue Remove PVP rules and let loose the ships of war!

Although, sticking to the rules and lining up block formation and being like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdM44rovn6c

Would be kind of hilariously awesome. Big Grin

I simply left because so much as glancing at the FL icon became a chore. I now literally have 6 gorillon times more fun playing Victoria II.

the problem i see is the lag, yes i know, its everybody's problem, or almost the great majority. But is greatly disgusting if you want to PvP, which is part of almost 80% of the factions trade in game (don't arge, you know its true). Even more if you notice its some sort of serverside problem (having lag with this old game while i can play WoT without any lag issues save the casual lag spike, well, i don't think its my connection...)

I don't play because of long game sessions. It takes 1 hour to find a meaningful encounter. That encounter then takes another hour or so. Logging off in the middle of a fight or a chat is nigh impossible.

In games such as WoT ,or any other game that is not so community driven, I can pretty much play for half an hour then and log off. And do that without disappointing other players.

I think the existence of some more... appealing Freelancer mods are encouraging this leaving rate, which is quite understandable. Why stay in one place when another brings you more possibilities?

How could this be reduced? Well, make Discovery more appealing, more stable, more lag-free, more... organized. But I doubt that's ever going to happen. Discovery has been in "Beta" since... since the beginning of 4.86 contrary to other mods who have a Beta period, normally, only after their prime-launch.

The real bane of Discovery is the player mentality it has. It is the community that strangulates itself, and the abhorrent behaviour the community exudes. New players find a very hard time joining the server, really, if you don't have a vet on the inside, you will find out that joining this game is a living Hell.

Not to mention the amount of immature cynicism, sardonicism, people looking to troll one another, the constant drama. People come to a game to escape the drama of real life and have fun without stress, not to be drowned into even more drama.

Really just a lack of enforcement on RP is a huge issue in my opinion as well as people just not putting enough time into their own roleplay to encourage new players to roleplay.

No meaningful interaction means people may as well be playing SP or a PVP server, or just logging into disco to sit in conn. The entire purpose of an RP server is to create simulated encounters, build storylines and allow players to alter the faction relations through meaningful roleplay. Without a large focus on roleplay, discovery lacks luster. We attract people who dont want to roleplay and then when they realize the only fun to be had on the server involved roleplay they become discouraged and leave. I'm not saying bad roleplay is the problem, the problem is a lack of people attempting to aid and encourage others to roleplay. How to fix it? I believe it requires everyone to take an extra step and help out those new to the server or just anyone who has been misguided at all in how they roleplay. It goes even beyond "This is captain [name] of the vessel [name]..." into what ship youre using with which ID, how you obtained said ship and would your character actually be hauling unrefined ore if he's affiliated with house shipping company no matter how profitable it is.

What fun is a balanced economy? I've always found finding exploitable features in game a fun if somewhat unsportsmanlike activity. Following conventions always gets boring after a little while. I think serious exploits should be fixed, but nerfing things such as an unintentionally slightly op trade route or fighter is kind of a buzzkill move.

Also, this:

I remember a comment where the game is about being an actor and playing a role, but really while it could be, it isn't. RL acting is a job for a reason - because it takes skill and tedious training to be a good actor. You may be your actor if you find sticking to your script fun, but others just want to be superficial and pew pew in cool spaceships, and contrary to certain opinions there's nothing wrong with the "relaxed RP" attitude.
The same thing towards people who put "skill" above all else. You trained for 10 years to be a good FL pvp'er and type while you fly, good for you. If I came here just to have some fun relaxed roleplaying, I don't want to be suddenly be thrust in competition with you simply because I can't and don't want to compete.
