Expanding on my initial post earlier due to the discussions that have been had since I posted. I feel I should go into more detail about my thoughts.
The reason I enjoy Freelancer, and have enjoyed it since 2004 and Discovery since 2007, is simple. I can login, maybe check my cargo, and click launch. That's it. No fuss. No waking up in my apartment, taking an elevator down to the lobby, no taking a tram to the spaceport, no summoning my ship, no taking an elevator to the landing bay, no moving my cargo manually into the hold of my ship, no climbing into my ship, no doing preflight checks and checking my fuel (or limpets if I'm on Elite Dangerous), no requesting permission to exit the landing bay, or leaving atmosphere manually. I literally just log in, check cargo, click launch.
When I play other games I have to login, check my dailies, check my weeklies, run a bunch of shit to make sure I complete those dailies and weeklies per each character (such as in World of Warcraft). Basically, I have a checklist to complete. Other space sims are much the way that I listed above in which it is another checklist to accomplish what I want to do. The only exception to this might be Elite Dangerous in the space sim category for easy accessibility but it still requires steps to get into space. I do not want that for Discovery. You might say I'm making a strawman argument here when comparing it to Star Citizen (which is clear that I did).
The reason I compared it is because while adding a fuel type system might not be as tedious as getting to space on SC, it does add an additional layer of management that you have to contend with. If that gets added, where does it stop? Will I have to do preflight checks before launching to space? Will I have to request to ATC to depart the planet? Will I need to play a minigame to load my ship with cargo? Do I have to manually land my ship on a space station?
Realism for the sake of realism is a death knell for many games in this genre, let's not do that here too.
You fear oblivion. Yet you forget. The universe remembers every atom of your being. Even dust hums your name in the dark. Roleplay is dead. Long live Powertraders and PvP I guess.

It's because nobody needs to, there's like 4 whole posts in the entire 11 page thread in favor. If I thought this had a chance in hell of going somewhere believe me I'd be waving ye olde pitchfork, but it's just not in the cards.
I do think that @Barrier should've been clear on this being a Barrier proposal and not a team proposal. It doesn't read like the latter to me, but a lot of people will see a gold name and assume, so those disclaimers can be helpful.
I already feel that Discovery Freelancer has lost some of its arcade-like pace that makes the game as a whole actually fun to play and ships satisfying to fly, especially in regards to pvp.
Let's not make that worse with survival/realism mechanics. They have their place for sure, but that place ain't here. Part of the fun of space is not truly knowing what could happen out there, what exists and what doesn't etc. and no one wants to think about the logistics around finding out. Leave that sad reality for real life, or games that aim to be a sim of sorts in the modern day.
You can RP running out of fuel if you want already. Just act stranded and in need of help. You can RP hauling fuel even if there's no actual consequence to not doing so. Imagination is one point of RP amidst many.
