A biodome doesn't necessarily provide food, it can be used as an oxygen generator since plants recycle carbon dioxide which humans breath out and convert it into oxygen to breath in again.

This fits in with the long range RP of the ship since with a biodome set up like this the ship can go long before the need to replenish oxygen supplies.

Modern day nuclear submarines can remain submerged for months at a time, do you see biodomes on them?

See, we have these nifty things called CO2 scrubbers which clear carbon dioxide out of the ship's air supply. That, along with a slow bleed from oxygen tanks stored in the ship, provide a continuous supply of breathable air to the crew for extended periods of time.

If anything, the technological advancements in freelancer's time period would have perfected this technology.

If the sole purpose of a biodome is to provide oxygen then it's possible that a vessel can operate indefinitely without the need to replenish oxygen supply at all. Oxygen supply on a long range ship always deplete faster than others such as food and fuel since everyone needs to breathe 24/7.

Also, as a research and exploration ship, the purpose of a biodome can also be justified as to study plant life in zero gravity as well as perform experiments on organic life other than humans.

Biodomes use gravity.

Soil you know.

On the ground.

Also its a large open bio... dome... Not really a totally epic science environment. As opposed to, say, a lab with a beaker or a jar or something where you could keep an eye on what's going down.

Just to say.

What if they use hydroponics ?

Also, they could simply be kitted up any number of ways depending on the ships mission profile.

Hydroponics lab? Besides they have 0g vegetation experiments on ISS...

Or, better yet, add a cargo pod to the area above the sensor.

Script it to work like cargo pods on trains.

Then make several varriants of pods to go there, a bio dome, more sensors, etc etc.

This'll allow for an easy way to customize the look of the ship without creating any balance issues.

I consider myself an authority on Biodomes, so I think I should reply here on that topic.

Biodomes are used to grow plants. Most commonly, these are the things Synth paste is made of, but there is no law why you couldent grow something else there, if the fact that a biodome simply couldent provide an efficent food supply without those. It could be turned into a park, for example. Not really suitable for science, unless its large scale agricultureal.

The reason they are their current size, is that smaller ones are inefficent for food production, and these are expensive things to be buying for a garden. I am assumeing Holograms meet most outdoor recreational needs, but for a guy with credits, anythings possible.

No longer a slave to the man!
