Ideally, fix tradelanes, ie. temporarily make ships immortal while for the duration inside the tradelanes. I've had enough of getting nearly murdered inside tradelanes everytime I enter it in close proximity to another ship anyways.

Eh, even if ships took no damage while in the tradelane, it'd still be pretty goofy/immersion breaking/unprofessional/whatever.

Also even discounting that, what about when the front ship is just exiting the tradelane, and is no longer protected? Then here you come at a massively higher speed than they are exiting... CLONK.

Pretty sure trade lane speed is global and individual ships can't be made faster than others - even if they could, we'd have the aforementioned ramming.

That aside, I don't see the point of a super fast trading ship. All that means is people can fly around powertrading without having to interact with anyone. Just pick a route that doesn't involve lanes, cruise along between jump holes at impossible-to-intercept speeds and alt+tab.

Whether it's profitable or not, I fail to see what this adds to the game.

hmm...
Let's say a trade lane is rated at a speed of 3000
and so our bullet train enters
in addition to having double the "cruise" speed of (6000), it could also accelerate and decel twice as quickly, or simply keep the accel and brake upon exit
while realistically this kind of G force is probably unhealthy, but this is FL so realism is not an issue.
and the train will exit the same speed any other ship exits, thus all's well ends well.

Also currently, inside the tradelane I'd assume that the bullet train would simply pass right through the slower ship? Could explain it as some kind of small distortion inside the lanes that allows this.

Wrong. having twice the speed means you are covering twice as much ground as everyone else, and probably twice as much encounters with other players. Also the stats should be designed so that it shouldn't be hard to intercept this ship if you know what you're doing.

You'll arrive at the JH before you know it. And when you alt-tab back, a pirate near the JH will have disabled your ship and carefully RPing his way to make you explode.

No atmosphere? GTFO.
The propeller is the greatest invention of all time.
