I got into Disco by looking at which faction/organisation interested me the most in the beginning, I then went ahead and joined the official faction with a very basic character. It's the easiest way to get in touch with the community and RP.

Pretty much all factions have members with a lot experience on the server who are happy to help you out at any time. They can help you develop your character, introduce you to people, explain (unwritten) rules, etc. (Plus you'll have someone to fly with on the server).

Some factions are better for new members to join than others, you'll see what I mean.

I made a character development sheet thanks to the help of some people. Would you guys mind giving some feedback on a starter's attempt at roleplay? Thanks!

I took a look at tha Google Doc and felt quite overwhealmed, and I have been playing RPG since about 20 jears ;-)

While the idea is good, I think you are taking it a bit too far, at least in my opinion.
I admire the thorough research and work you put into you own character, and a lot of new players could take a look at that sheet and find ideas for themselves. But mainly, we are here to have fun. Not do write an essay on a fictional character.

Of course there are more things that define your inGame "life" and Character than only the pure biological stuff like age, gender, hair colour ect, and taking time to think about that is important. What is your characters background, what are his desires, his secrets.
What does he want to achieve, and what is the motivation fueling him to rise above the normal mass of NPC pilots clogging along the lanes.

Keep it simple though, for after all you will have to remember it all.
And most players you "meet" will just be sitting in a sifferent ship.

If you intend to write some forum RP, there is plenty of space to fill in the blanks in your character, but it would be rare indeed that you need a character sheet for it. You would neet a set of defined motivations, problems and other issues though, to know how you would react to different persons and situations.

RP is a game of "what if" ...

What if this man threatens me... is he an enemy, or just greedy, or has he a valid reason and I might even offer him help if he where not so agressive.

What if I threatened him ?

What if I where unsure how to react, and had no time to think about it ?
Probably I would use that other defined set of "rules and reactions" I normally use, reacting as the Player, the human I am, and not as my Character ?
I would let my boredom, or my anger, or my greed for credits to purchase that other great Capship with my other account define my reactions. And not the role I am just currently playing.

Well on the flipside Flynn, I personally really like detail. Each and every one of my own characters have a very, very big basin of facts and complicated mentalities laid out. While it may not be out in direct writing besides some mentions in Wiki pages, detail like this isn't necessarily over-thinking it.

You're not wrong though. It all depends on the players preference. If you'd like to play with a little 'more and current' train of thought, that very well can be accomplished and enjoyed too. It doesn't mean that a large sea of details is a bad thing.

I do like the rest of what you've said though, that's very good Advice!

A lot of players here have different styles on how they do thing Shirusaino, it's good to look into the alternatives and see what fits on what YOU would enjoy.

From a personal perspective. Create your character, and merely let him/her develop through interactions with other people. We're not that scary, don't feel afraid to bug us or anything. So far, you seem to have a good start though!

Not scary... says our major haunt ;-)

Detail is fine, but a lot of details tend to clog up reading.
The trick is to have the right details handy if you need them, and it´s an Art, or we would all be writing Novels for a living.

I do admit I like complicated characters myself, even if they tend to *seem simple* on the outside. Well, we all have our secrets.
