Anything that can take a shell that weighs the same as a Volkswagen Beetle and throw it 20 miles inland accurately should be feared.

HEH, I actually got a tour of the IOWA when I was in the Navy. I worked on her radar once too.

EDIT: The US Navy actually still has 2 Battleships in lay up....... Iowa and Wisconson

I thought battleships were pretty much useless nowadays being too vulnerable to air attacks?

Aircraft carriers are also vulnerable to air attacks. I just so happens that a Aircraft carrier can put up it's own CAP. The Aircraft carrier is also seen in the company of other Anti Air capable ships. This is why a Battleship group had the same ships in it as an aircraft carrier group.

The Battleships main mission before they were retired was Marine support. Soften up the beaches and suppress any sort of resistance and make it easier for the Marines to hit the beach.

Battleships also have more armor than any other ship out there, both below the waterline and on and below the main deck, because a battleship was originally designed to fight other battleships, and the shells from other battleships would hit the main deck and burrow thru before exploding. This is devastating when a shell makes it to a magazine.

Interesting to know hehe, mustve been cool onboard the Iowa... Here where Im from all the naval ships come, since its the MAIN port for naval ships etc. before entering the mediterranean, such as the USS Seawolf I think it is, the submarine and all the naval ships come here pretty cool...
HMS Invincible, HMS Ark Royal, HMS Illustrious and many more haha lots, pretty cool tbh. If where I came from, Gibraltar was put into a FL mod it would be like, a Kansas full of JH sort of thing... or a TNG Nexus, filled with JH and great bases for ships/gas supplies lol. You might know about it Hack.

Ah yes, I visited Gibraltar in 1991 onboard the USS Belknap, CG-26. We were pier side replacing our Radar antenna. Got to go ashore and enjoy the hospitality. Had a few pints, saw the sights, went book shopping, and avoided the monkeys.:) I lived in Italy from 1988 til 1991, as a crew member on board the Belknap. Gaeta was our Homeport, halfway between Rome and Naples.
