I suppose a few things have changed around recently. To get a jump start on things, you can apply for a Vet's Package. I'd also recommend looking over the current Official Factions, see if there's anything Corsair or Outcast related that you may be interested in.

I think the same, I have played EVE online and Elite Dangerous but this game has something that makes it unique, even for those of us who played it decades ago.
