I don't recommend this. I remember when I first time joined the Disco server and started from a scratch. Starting with those 8500 credits and then trading in order to buy another ship with bigger cargo hold, and then another, and another is a very important part of Freelancer's gameplay. You will learn a lot of new things, you will familiarize yourself with new places and enjoy discovering them and you will always have a purpose that will drive you forward. Simply put, you will learn what's what. Skipping this will leave you dead in a water.
Plus, I consider these starts to be the most enjoyable things in the game. I can only tell you that now I'm trading with my Adv. Train and it's about as boring as a bucket of wallpaper paste. I'm not doing it because I want to, I'm doing it because I have to. Seriously, don't do it.
Only take loans if you lose your characters because....for example you forget to log in and they get autodeleted in 40 days, or because of HW failure which is what happened to me or something like that.

So, having never played multiplater before, I don't see what the big deal is of getting your ship destroyed. If you care about the RP factor then you wouldn't F1 anyway. Dont you just respawn where ever you last docked? Is there some penalty when you blow up, like you lose a lot of money or something?

Nope, no penalties, and you respawn at your last dock. So yeah, when I say lowly, I'm mean right down there, scraping the very bottom of the cess pit.

If you die, you lose all of your cargo in the cargo hold, and any weapons you might not already have mounted.
And then you respawn at your last dock point, yes.
Mostly, those who F1 are not the ones that do care about the RP in the game. Those tend to just trade away in an OORP fashion to get as much money as possible in order to buy the biggest ship and go killing random people around. So they F1 out so they'd not lose their cargo. A dirty tactic punished most heavily, and deservedly.
Anyways, there's a lot of good players out there, but this is something that plagues us and we try to improve the situation by educating people about RP and all.

Wow, so dying is not too desirable. Understandably so. Doesn't make much sense choosing death over forking out some credits to pirates.
I have never done much RP stuff, but I think I am up for giving it a try. It certainly seems like it would make the game make more sense and probably will be pretty fun once I get the hang of it.
It just dawned on me that time zones would have a big impact on active server population. Is there an established server time, and what are peak hours?
I doubt you'll have too much of a problem with a dead server, lots of American folks here. We thankfully have a decent spread of people over most timezones, so even if you play at the odd hours, should be plenty of folks around.
Server time is GMT officially.
Well there's active players throughout the day really, but the real peak time, when the player number revolves around the maximum(200) is in evenings GMT 0.
There's a lot of people on afternoons GMT 0 as well.
So you being GMT -6, the time when there'll be most people online for you will be your afternoons, from around 3 PM to 7-8 PM.
But you'll see for yourself anyways.
The player number goes from 40ish when it's lowest activity, to 200 when it's highest.
On weekend evenings you'll probably find yourself waiting a few minutes for a slot to open up.:P

RP takes alot of getting used to: you have to think "what should my character do" as opposed to "what should I do"... I'm a bit of a tradewhore myself so I'm easing into it by running a Freelance Trader across Sirius poking my nose into things, before I actually start a Character with a fixed Faction.
But there's still RP with other Players (which is the point): various Navies get ticked off when you run their blockades; you might want to browse the Forums to get an idea of where other Factions (both existing and made up) are coming from... and if you use Tradelanes alot you *will* get Pirated alot though of course under level 40 everybody will leave you alone while you get on your feet. Expect not only to have to play a Character in a big play, but have others explain themselves to you also. I get thanked for bringing food to Crete (and a bit criticized for exporting the Alien Artifacts) and I'm currently setting up negotiations with a Pirate faction to bring Tourists in:)
From what I hear alot of people run their Traders as Zoners as secondary characters just to fund their other accounts, but I like Trading for its own sake as it sounds like you do.
Quote:Also.....you may want to do some research on "special" enemies you may run into, Mon'Star especially
Well, all the research you need to do on him boils down to: If you see him on your scanners, it's time to run away in the opposite direction, unless you have 3 or 4 bomber swarms/battleships in support
Anyway, most of your questions have been answered, but I think it might be useful to let you know about the /givecash command, if you're planning on being a trader. type /givecash name amount to give that player that amount of credits, e.g. /givecash Rex.Mullins 100000 (feel free to try it now :P). It also works with your own characters, so it's a handy way of moving cash from your trader to military/police characters you might have (who, believe me, suck up credits like a sponge)
